Wastewater treatment under control
Energy savings thanks to optimal aeration in the aeration basin
In order to reduce the energy consumption in the biological phase of the wastewater treatment plant, the town of Velen took two measures – firstly, to purchase new, energy-efficient blowers and, secondly, to integrate the Liquiline Control aeration control system from Endress+Hauser in order to optimize nitrogen reduction.
The results
-
Reduction of the plant's annual power consumption by 100,000 kWh within four years thanks to new blowers and the Endress+Hauser Liquiline Control aeration control system
-
Stable running and energy-optimized process with proven wastewater measurement technology from Endress+Hauser
-
Quick and flexible integration of the Endress+Hauser control system into the existing control system
-
Simple operation by remote access
The customer challenge
The challenge of increasingly stringent specifications for cleaning wastewater requires continuous optimization and investment. In the past, switching the blowers for aeration on and off in Velen's wastewater treatment plant was controlled by a redox break point. This method worked well over many years. However, with the renovation of the blowers in autumn of 2020, the town saw an opportunity to save energy and to improve nitrogen elimination with a process-oriented aeration control system.
Our solution
Liquiline Control solution is an automation platform for wastewater treatment processes. At the Velen wastewater treatment plant, it is designed for intermittent aeration control to eliminate nitrogen in two independent zones. Switching the aeration on and off for nitrification and denitrification is controlled by the upper and lower ammonium limit values. For additional process reliability, the system works with minimum and maximum runtimes and pause times in the blower.
